Ouachita Parish, LA (April 23, 2023) – The Louisiana State Police are actively investigating a hit-and-run accident that left 60-year-old Cristopher Rice of West Monroe, Louisiana, seriously injured.
At approximately 3:15 a.m. on April 21, the Louisiana State Police from Troop F responded to the scene of a crash on Louisiana Highway 34.
Reports from authorities show that Rice was riding a bicycle south on the highway during the early morning hours. For reasons unknown, an unidentified vehicle was traveling south on the same roadway when it struck the bicyclist. The vehicle fled the scene of the crash.
The impact of the collision caused Rice to be ejected from his bicycle near Louisiana Highway 557.
Rice suffered severe injuries due to the crash. Medics responded to the scene and briefly rendered aid to the victim. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was admitted with life-threatening injuries.
At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with Cristopher Rice at this time. We hope for his full recovery.
Bicycle Accidents in Louisiana
Every year, hundreds of bicyclists across the United States are affected by the negligent and reckless actions of motorists who are sharing the road. There are countless factors that lead drivers to strike bicyclists who are traveling nearby. Some of the most common causes of bicycle accidents here in the state of Louisiana include:
Speeding: Drivers who exceed the speed limit are less likely to see and react to people on bicycles nearby, making it more difficult to avoid crashing into them.
Impaired driving: Drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs are more likely to cause crashes while traveling here in Louisiana, including those involving bicycles.
Failure to yield: Many drivers fail to yield to bicyclists, particularly while traveling through busy intersections, which can result in serious accidents.
Distracted driving: Motorists who do not have their attention on the road ahead while driving, such as using their phones to text or talk or eating, are more likely to cause an accident involving a bicycle.
Unfortunately, any act of negligence can lead to a serious accident that forever changes the lives of those involved. If you have been involved in an accident that was caused by the reckless or negligent actions of another motorist, you may be able to recover compensation for the losses and damages you face.
